Students OpinionNamaskara Sir,I studied at Yoga Darshanam in September 2011 and can honestly say it was an experience that changed my life. Dedicating a whole month to yoga and practicing with intensity every day, no matter where you study, is an extremely positive experience both emotionally and physically. Learning at Yogadarshanam required starting early in the morning and studying throughout the day until the evening. It was challenging on the body at first, but Santhosh always made students feel that it was within their capabilities to keep up. He managed to accommodate students who arrived with varying degrees of experience and fitness. (Having said that, he cannot perform miracles so a reasonable level of fitness is required!!) His approach to teaching was not intimidating or unpleasantly demanding, yet he encouraged us to achieve our best and make the most of the course. He had a healthy balance of perspectives when explaining and did not overbear students with his personal beliefs or opinions. He provided lots of information from his very broad knowledge and also allowed us space to build our knowledge on our own. He does not spoon feed students and if you want to make the most of the course, you need to be prepared to put in plenty of your own effort. You need to bring positively, a willingness to learn and an open mind in order to get maximum rewards from the course. A lot of material is covered, including yoga therapy, yoga for pregnancy, partner yoga, pranayama, kriya, mudra etc. He gives a complete explanation of all poses with methodology, benefits and limitations. Even though the days are long, and the teaching is kept to a tight schedule, by the end of the course you realize you probably need a year to cover the material properly! But it is an excellent introduction to all the foundations of yoga and Santhosh teaches an interesting mix of styles whilst remaining loyal to classical principles of yoga. . If you are the sort of person who is independent, patient, open and genuinely interested to learn then Yogadarshanarm is an excellent choice for you. Everyone is unique and has different needs and expectations, for me Yogadarshanam was just right and provided me with everything I needed. Thank you very much Santhosh! The month was very challenging physically and emotionally with foundation and advanced asana practice, yoga therapy classes, chanting, meditation, yoga philosophy and much more from dawn till dusk! An intense syllabus of over 200 hours was covered in only 30 days. However, Santosh Kumar's unending energy and patience kept me motivated and challenged and in the end when I could do so many more asanas that I could initially do and had learnt so many new things, I knew it was all worth it. During the TTC, Santosh Kumar also organised a visit to a village which was an amazing experience, we saw the beauty of nature, met lots of hospitable kind villagers and also did pranayama in a lush forest. I enjoyed the course immensely and have benefited greatly from it. I am looking forward to returning to do the advanced training after I have deepened my practice. E-mail: penelope_caswell@hotmail.com I’ve been asked to provide feedback of the TTC program and my comment overall is that my knowledge has improved as a result of the program and I feel more well rounded. What I enjoyed about the program is the focus on teaching as this is a critical skill to have that many TTCs do not offer. I enjoyed learning pranayama, meditation, and chanting as this to me is also incredibly important as to just focusing on asanas. Also, the classes are small maximum five students so there is individual attention given. Things that I would like the program to offer is a few classes dedicated to learning vinyasa flow as this program focuses on classical ashtanga and classical and does not include vinyasa flow. I also would like to see some classes given in the village as future plans. What I would tell future students is that it is a very intensive program so come in with an open mind and be prepared too work. I really enjoyed going to Santhosh’s village and was the highlight of my trip to Mysore. I think it is very important to connect with nature and offers a glimpse into a different life. To combine yoga with nature is very soothing and calming to the soul. I enrolled for two weeks of morning and afternoon classes, focusing on hip opening exercises, eye healing techniques and meditation. I had been practicing Hatha Yoga for several years and was very keen to experience Ashtanga Yoga for the first time. After one week only, I could feel the difference in my body already. I had gained a lot of fitness, strength and flexibility. To keep it short: As I am writing this, I am sitting comfortably in the lotus pose. Santosh Kumar's professional and dedicated teaching style brings out the best in every student. Though in a group, he was paying attention to my personal needs and abilities. His comments on the benefits of the asanas often helped me to push myself beyond what I had thought to be my limit. Each class was ended by some form of meditation and we were taught different styles of which I particularly loved the chanting ones. The classes on eye exercises and pranayama were excellent, with all practices explained in detail, not to forget the Kriyas for cleansing the nasal cavities which were definitely a truly unique experience. Feeling the differences already, not only physically, but also mentally and spiritually, I am confident that continuing these practices will have a positive effect not only on my eye sight, but overall health and life. His universal approach to Yoga and offering all aspects of it to his students in small classes, makes his Yoga Darshanam the best place in Mysore to study Yoga. Santosh put together a program for my needs, including Kriyas. I joined the morning and afternoon classes. I believe that Yogadarshanam system uplifts our health status Dr. Ajitha , Vikram Hospital From 31 August to 21 Sept. 2010 I was beginning Iyengar-style, Hatha Yoga at Yoga Darshanam in Gokulam. My instructor was Santosh Kumar. Overall, the course was a positive experience. Santosh was competent. He was consisitent and patient in his communications and created an environment conductive to safe, efficient learning. Since this was my first yoga class, and the duration was 3 weeks, much of the course was devoted to quite precise and sometimes complicated preliminary pre-asana excercises The actual asanas covered in the course were described with English names during class The reference text for the asanas, BKS Iyengar's Light on Yoga, provides asana names in Sanskrit. Providing foreign students with a list of English and Sanskrit asana names could be useful. The same type of list might be helpful for pranayama as well.
